NINE

Shay and Arno were at the big table in the kitchen playing two-handed poker when Driscoll entered the shack with Norma. Shay shoved himself up, his face slack with relief at the sight of them.

"Where the hell you been?" Shay's voice was like sandpaper. Hangover was written all over him. "I been going nuts, worrying."

"Norma took me for a ride." Driscoll watched Arno shuffle the pack of cards carefully in his long, thick fingers, not looking up.

Shay's eyes darted suspiciously from Driscoll to Norma. "Yeah? Where'd you go?"

"Sightseeing," Driscoll told him, taking off his hat and setting it on the window sill. "I've had six years inside, Steve. I wanted some air."

"Oh." Shay lowered himself slowly back onto his chair, still looking upset. "You shoulda left me a note. I thought maybe you'd…"

He didn't finish it. Norma finished it for him: "You think Drisc and I ran off together, Steve? That it?".

Shay shook his head and mumbled, "No." But he didn't raise his eyes to theirs.

Driscoll looked over at Norma and said, "I could use some coffee."

Norma nodded and went to the stove. Driscoll walked to the table and pulled over a chair, sat down opposite Arno, watching him shuffle the cards slowly.

Shay asked, "Wanna play, Drisc?"

"Sure."

Shay reached for the deck of cards. Arno didn't give them up. Instead he gripped the pack tighter in his large fist and met Driscoll's waiting eyes, his flat-featured face set in a calculating calm.

"Driscoll," he said quietly, "I told you to stick here when I went out. Maybe you didn't hear me?"

"I heard you."

Arno nodded. "I thought you did. The idea is, you're not supposed to take chances on getting spotted and picked up. Smart guys do what they're told."

"Not when you're doing the telling, Arno."

"Just keep it up," Arno said. "You won't last long, the way you're going." He suddenly looked at the cards in his hands, tossed them at Shay. "Driscoll, I got a message for you."

"Who from?"

"The guy you met last night. He wants to see you again."

"Okay."

"Remember where he was waiting for us?"

"Yeah."

"Can you get there yourself from here?"

"I think so."

"I'll show you, on a road map, just to make sure. Soon as it gets (dark, you're supposed to drive out to meet him. By yourself."

Driscoll glanced at an open window. "Long wait till dark." He wondered if the man he was meeting tonight was going to try again to talk him into assassinating the governor. He hoped the guy didn't get tough about it. His nerves smarted from the session with Ruth. He was in no mood to be pushed-by anybody.

Turning to Shay, he said, "Deal 'em." He gave Arno a thin-lipped smile. "I'll give you a chance to get your money back."

Arno stared at him, unblinking. He began to whistle softly through his teeth as he picked up the dealt cards.
